| COMMON TRAVEL EVALUTION NIGHT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Want to see what a travel practice is like? Email us and we can give you the practice schedule of some of our teams in the grade you are interested in watching. Want to see a travel game in action? Check our schedule online at www.lowellsoccer.com – we always have at least 1 home game each weekend. Interested in a certain team/grade? simply change the tabs to select the team you’re interested in. Understand – the coaches of our current teams may not be the coaches next fall – travel coach applications are now being accepted and coaches will be placed in June. Who needs to be evaluated? Anyone interested in playing on a travel team Fall 2022/Spring 2023 All players are evaluated year to year so they can be placed appropriately. All players are placed on skill level. More skilled players are placed on the upper-level teams and lesser skilled on the middle to lower-level teams – this ensures a more competitive season and a more enjoyable season for players. We will ONLY enter the number of travel teams we have paid registrants to fill – this may mean no additional positions for late registrants. Who is eligible to play travel? All players ENTERING Grade 3 IN SEPT. 2022 and up are eligible for travel. Players ENTERING Grade 2 IN SEPT. 2022 – may also be considered with use of the 1 year play up rule. Anyone interested should be evaluated. What if my child will play 1 season (fall or spring) – do they still need to attend evaluations? – YES When are evaluations? FRIDAY MAY 13TH - Grade 7/8 6:00pm – 7:00pm** (Fall 2022/Spring 2023 School Year) ** CHECK IN 5:30 SATURDAY MAY 14TH - Grade 3/4 3:30 pm – 4:30pm** (Fall 2022/Spring 2023 School Year) ** CHECK IN 3PM Grade 5/6 5:30PM – 6:30pm** (Fall 2022/Spring 2023 School Year) ** CHECK IN 5PM Why is it important travel players need attend? Players are evaluated based on skill with his/her peers. This helps to ensure proper team placement as all are evaluated using the same skills drills and by the same evaluators. What if I cannot attend? Notify us by email NO LATER THAN 4PM MAY 13TH. Be sure to include your child’s name, the grade they will be attending fall 2022 AND BE SURE TO REGISTER BY MAY 14TH AT NOON. We will either have an Evaluation Make Up day and/or evaluate your child during a practice or game for proper placement. ONLY THOSE REGISTERED BY EVALUTION DAY WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR MAKE UP EVALUATION DAY. What is the difference between rec & travel? All players grade 5 and up are travel players. Travel teams are formed for grades 3&4. Travel teams are uni-gendered. If a mixed gendered team is formed, it is considered a “Boys” team. Travel teams play ½ of their games at home and ½ of their games at an away field. Away fields can be as close as Billerica, Chelmsford, Tewksbury or as far as Sommerville, Medford, Melrose. Home games are played at Edwards Field. If a travel game is canceled – in most cases, it will be made up. Make ups can take place on a weeknight or weekend. Many times, coaches will ask parents for input so they can ensure they will have enough players attend to play. What is the travel team commitment? Attending practice is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED so players can work together to develop skills and work together as a team to increase competitiveness…..players will be expected to attend at least 1 practice per week – most teams will have 2 practices per week. How long will evaluations last? Plan to arrive 30 minutes PRIOR to evaluations for check in and registration. Evaluations will start promptly and last about 45 minutes – 1 hour. Please be sure you arrive to pick up your child at the end of evaluations if you plan to leave. Coaches will be evaluating groups throughout the evening and will not be able to “keep an eye” on all players after their evaluation time. When will we know what team our child is on? Travel Roster placements will be released in July to parents via email. When will we know who our coach is? Coach applications are now being accepted. The coaching committee will meet to make recommendations to our Board of Directors for Travel coach placement in June. Parents will be informed of their child’s coach once rosters are released in July. What can we expect during evaluations? ALL Players will be evaluated on skills such as passing, dribbling, ball control, shooting, focus etc and rated based on their skill in comparison to their peers. They are then later ranked and placed appropriately. If needed and a player needs more evaluation for proper placement– our evaluators will watch the player in a game or practice setting. Please do not ask our evaluators to learn how your daughter or son did. Also be advised that your daughter or son may have been positioned on team that they either did not perform well on or over performed. It is our obligation to place them where they best fit even if it means moving them to another competition level. Who will evaluate? Our travel coaches, board members, or rec coach wishing to evaluate are encouraged to attend. Our travel director will over see evaluations as well as evaluate. And we have 2 coaches who will ensure skill drills are properly being performed by evaluators. Can my child move up? If you wish for your child to be considered to move up – they must attend the evaluation time for his/her grade this fall – AS WELL AS evaluation for the grade level, they wish to play. Move ups are not guaranteed. Also note – no player attending evaluations will be placed on a wait list for placement so an early move up can be placed. How can I save money? Players registering for the FULL TRAVEL YEAR - which pays for the FALL 2022 AND SPRING 2023 season will save the most $$. THIS DISCOUNTED RATE IS ONLY AVAILABLE UNTIL 5:30pm ON MAY 14TH. Players registering online – avoid the additional 10.00 fee charged per player registering at the field Evaluation Night. VOLUNTEER – if you volunteer with our league – you can earn credit for a future registration. If you coach – you will receive a refund of your child’s registration fees season end provided you complete all coaching and season requirements. Do you offer scholarships? The state of Mass does offer a Every Kid in Sports scholarship for those that qualify. If you are in need of scholarship consideration – we kindly request that you apply for the state scholarship first. You should do this ASAP so you can have your qualification result before evaluations. (all players evaluated need to be registered) In the event you do not qualify for the state offered scholarship – Lowell Youth Soccer does offer scholarships you can then apply for. In most cases, these do require some volunteering as we are an all-volunteer organization. Email us at lowellsoccer@comcast.net for more info. What can I do to prepare for the check in process? Register online OR have a completed registration form with you with a check or cash for on field registration. ALSO be sure to complete the Travel Check In form (each player will need this regardless of how they register) and pay special attention to the uniform size you are requesting for your child. REMEMEBR _ they will wear this uniform fall 2022 and spring 2023 so allow for growth. We will order the size you request and have limited available for exchange season start. Having these completed prior to arriving – will save just a few minutes per player – and overall save LOTS of time and make check in quicker for all. IMPORTANT: Regarding age group, a Grade ¾ player is a player who will be in Grade 3 or Grade 4 for the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 School year. Likewise for the older age groups. How can I help?
